Q&A

Susan Schuppli

After the screening of Moving Ice, there will be a conversation between filmmaker Susan Schuppli and artist and researcher Fernando José Pereira. The film revisits the history of the so-called frozen water trade, when, in the early 19th century, ice extracted from lakes and glaciers was turned into a commodity and shipped along colonial routes for consumption by tropical elites.
Drawing from this little-known narrative, Moving Ice connects the commodification of ice with today’s climate crisis, marked by the unprecedented acceleration of melting caused by anthropogenic factors.
The conversation between Schuppli and Pereira will expand on these issues, reflecting on how art can summon historical memories to address the ecological challenges of the present.
