The latest work presented by the duo emptyset is a formidable rip in the fabric of time, as if a sound frequency from the 60s has only now become audible, like a time capsule containing the technological past and sonic utopias of the 20th century that collided with the present with a bang. Recorded in single takes, “Dissever” revives production techniques that have long gone out of use, such as tape manipulation and analogue spatialisation, breathing new life into the interplay between cosmic rock, electronic music, and minimalism. The result is a rich, hypnotic sound that embodies the finest and the most powerful spirit of emptyset’s style, with layers resonating like echoes of potential futures that never came into existence. Paired with the lighting design by Marcel Weber/MFO, “Dissever” takes us on a delirious retro sonic and visual journey through time that is, much to our delight, both ritualistic and pulsating.
