The tracks on “You said you’d hold my hand through the fire" — the album released this year, one which marks Hyperdub’s 20th anniversary — are much more than the story of a collaboration between two musicians who admire each other as artists. The work is riddled with enigmatic cracks that give us glimpses into the harsh reality of a four-year long relationship that ended, leaving behind its own crevices and a story to be told. Precisely in the midst of a romantic break-up, Iceboy Violet and Nueen have built a monument that documents the history of their union, laying bare both the good and the bad. The result is an intimate, sorrowful and exposed music album, whose sound navigates through an electronic fog of grainy hi-fi, at times testifying to the possibility of life in a post-Burial world. Performed live, expect an exorcism that propels us to a happy ending.
